On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump did not rule out using military or economic coercion to achieve his goal of both Greenland and Panama Canal Under the control of the United States, as his son, Donald Trump Jr., is in Greenland for Trump’s purchase of the autonomous Danish territory.
“I can’t believe you, you’re talking about Panama and Greenland,” Trump told reporters at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. “No, I can’t convince you of these two. But I can say this – we need them for economic security… I’m not going to commit to that. You may have to do this. something.”
Trump Jr. arrived in Greenland on Tuesday aboard his father’s Trump Force One plane, after several weeks. Dad again expressed his desire for the US to gain control from the autonomous territory of Denmark. The visit comes just a day after Trump offered to “MAGA” the people of the vast region in a social media post.
“Just here as tourists,” Trump Jr. told reporters as he entered the airport in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, on Tuesday. “We’ve been talking about going for a long time. I was actually supposed to be here last spring for some of the things I do in my spare time, but I’m so excited to be here. Amazing country.”
He was quickly asked about his father, who has said he wants Greenland to be part of the US, but he only responded by saying “hello” to the soon-to-be second-term president.
“We were talking to him yesterday, so he welcomes everyone to Greenland,” Trump Jr. said.
Greenland has about 57,000 inhabitants and is a fully autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has oil, natural gas and mineral resources, but its economy depends on Danish subsidies and fishing.
Still, Trump on Tuesday questioned Denmark’s control of Greenland, despite Greenland’s status as an autonomous territory.
“Nobody even knows if they have any right, title or interest,” Trump said vaguely of Denmark and Greenland.
“Donald Trump Jr.’s visit is a private visit and that is respected by Naalakkersuisut – the government of Greenland. Therefore, there will be no reaction to the visit,” Miningvak Kleist, permanent secretary of the Greenlandic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. told CBS News before arriving on Tuesday. “Our country is open for visits and visitors are welcome in our beautiful country.”
Reuters, citing a source familiar with the trip, said Trump Jr. planned to film content for a podcast and that he would only visit for one day.
On Monday, President-elect Trump said in a post published on the social network That he was, “heard that the people of Greenland are ‘Magas.’ My son, Don Jr., and various representatives, will travel there to see the most magnificent sites and sights. Greenland is an incredible place and people will benefit greatly if and when it becomes part of our nation to protect it and appreciate it from the very vicious outside world.
Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland during his first term as president, but the idea quickly fizzled Denied by the Danish authorities.
Two weeks ago, Trump said on social media that “for the purposes of national security and liberty around the world, the United States of America feels that possession and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Greenland’s government has twice denied Trump’s claim of interest in the territory, along with Prime Minister Mune Egede. He said before Christmas that “Greenland is ours. We will not and will never be for sale.”
Last week, Egede delivered a New Year’s speech calling for Greenland to throw off the “shackles of colonialism” and gain full independence from Denmark.
“It is time for us to take a step and shape our future, also in terms of who we will work closely with and who our trading partners will be,” Egede said.
One of the Greenlandic members of the Danish parliament, Aja Kemnitz, said that Trump’s interest should not happen, Reuters reported.
“I don’t want to be a pawn in Trump’s wild dreams of expanding his empire in our country,” Chemnitz said.
